Liquid measures in the USA are based on the old wine measures that were used in Britain before 1824 and differ considerably from their imperial equivalents. The fluid ounce is identical but there are only 15 to the pint as compare with 20 in the UK system. thus the US quart, and gallon, both of which are still in common use, are 20% smaller than their British equivalents. The mos important multiple is the barrel (US, oil) (=42 US gallons, 25 imperial gallons, 0.158987294928 \(\left[\mathrm{m}^3\right]\)) which is extensively used in the international oil industry.
