Description of the centimeter unit

A centimeter is a unit of length in the metric system which is equal to one hunderedth (\(\frac{1}{100} = 0.01\) of meter (indicated by SI prefix centi). The word centimeter is written according to Amerian spelling while in international spelling the centimeter is written as centimetre. This unit was the base unit of lenght in the absolete centimetre-gram-second (CGS) system of units.
Unlike millimiter or kilometer which are often pereferd by technicians, the centimeter remains a practical unit of length ofr many evereday measurements. While centimetere is used as the measurement of length, it is also used to:

  • report the level of rainfall as measured by a rain gauge,
  • in CGS system the centimeter was sued to measure capacitance, where 1 cm of capacitance was equal to \(1.113\times10^{-12}\)farads,
  • in cartography, centimeters are sued to make conversion from map scale to real world scale (kilometers),
  • to represent second moment of areas (cm\(^4\)), and
  • as the inverse of the kyser, a CGS unit, and thus a non-SI metric unit of wavenumber: 1 kayser = 1wave per centimeter; or more generally, (wavenumber in kaysers) = 1/(wavelength in centimeter). The SI unit of wavenumber is the inverse meter, m\(^{-1}\).

Description of the inch unit

The inch, abbreviated as in or '' is unit of lenght in imperial (British) and US customary systems of measurement. The in is equal to \(\frac{1}{36}\) yard or \(\frac{1}{12}\) foot. The inch was derived from the Roman word uncia which means twelfth. Altho the standards for the exact length of an inch have varied in the past, the adoption of the international yard during 1960s, it has been based on the metric system and is equal to 25.4 mm.
The inch unit has been commonly used worldwide for electronic pars, especially for diagonal displays of consumer electronics.
